Radiation for breast cancer trigger heart disease
A new study on breast cancer shows the relationship between radiation treatments with increased risk of heart disease later in life .
Any given radiation therapy provide radiation exposure to the heart , and the risk of triggering heart disease with average probability level of 7.4 percent .
It was presented by the Clinical Trial Service Unit in Oxford , Sarah Darby , reports Medical Daily .
Women who already have risk factors for heart disease , are more susceptible to radiation exposure so that the risk for coronary heart disease later in life , doctors said .
However , the radiation gives great value for the cure of breast cancer patients .
"Clinicians should consider the risk factors for heart disease and tumor control when making decisions about the use of radiotherapy for breast cancer , " said Darby and colleagues quoted from the New England Journal of Medicine .
Scientists say doctors need to take extra measures to protect women from the risk of heart disease, attention factor of hypertension , diabetes , and high cholesterol .
After radiation therapy for breast cancer patients , clinicians should pay attention to women's heart health , said Dr. Jean - Bernard Durand of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston .
" Pay attention to their cholesterol numbers , note the people with diabetes , their blood pressure set , because all it can do to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease , " he said as quoted by MedPage Daily .
