It is unclear what causes vaginal cancer . In general , cancer begins when healthy cells undergo genetic mutations that transform normal cells into abnormal cells . Healthy cells grow and multiply at a set rate , then to eventually die . Cancer cells grow and multiply out of control , and they do not die . Abnormal cells come together and form a mass ( tumor ) . Cancer cells invade nearby tissues and can decide from the initial tumor to spread elsewhere in the body ( metastasis ) , as reported by MayoClinic .
Vaginal cancer is divided into various types based on the type of cell where the cancer started . Types of vaginal cancer include :
- Squamous cell carcinoma of the vagina , which begins in squamous cell thin . Flat cells lining the surface of the vagina and is the most common type .
- Vaginal adenocarcinoma , which begins in glandular cells in the vaginal surface .
- Vaginal melanoma , which develops in the pigment -producing cells ( melanocytes ) of the vagina .
- Vaginal sarcoma , which develops in the cells or smooth muscle cells of connective tissue in the vaginal wall .
Factors that may increase the risk of vaginal cancer can be started from the increasing age . Vaginal cancer risk increases with age . Most women who are diagnosed with vaginal cancer are older than 50 years . Atypical cells in the vagina is called vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia . Women with vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia have an increased risk of vaginal cancer . A small number of women with vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia will eventually develop vaginal cancer , though doctors are not sure what causes some cases to develop into cancer . Other risk factors that have been associated with an increased risk of vaginal cancer include multiple sexual partners , too young during sex , smoking , and HIV infection
