Tomatoes and foods made from soy is known to effectively prevent prostate cancer if eaten together , a study suggests . The result would be different if both the foods eaten separately or individually .

However , half of the rats consuming tomatoes and soy does not have lesions of prostate cancer at the end of the study . The study involved mice aged 4 to 18 weeks and is grouped into four sections based feeding . The first group was given a diet of 10 percent tomato powder , a second group of two percent of soy , a third group is a combination of tomato and soy powder , and the last group does not consume them.

Erdman said that eating tomatoes , soy , and the combination can significantly reduce the occurrence of prostate cancer . But the combination of tomato and soy are eaten together provide the best results . Erdman asserted that rats who ate tomatoes and soy simultaneously, known to only 45 percent who develop prostate cancer , compared with mice that ate the tomatoes alone ( 61 percent ) , and soybean meal alone ( 66 percent ) .

Erdman noted that serum levels of soy isoflavones and prostate in mice similar to those found in Asian men who on average consume 1-2 servings of soy each day . In countries where soy is eaten on a regular basis , prostate cancer occurs at a lower level .

Krystle Zuniga , co-author of the study, said the results of studies in mice have shown that consuming 3-4 servings of tomato products per week and 1-2 daily servings of soy products may protect against prostate cancer .

Erdman said that it is better to eat fruit than the whole tomato lycopene supplements and drinking milk better than soy isoflavone supplements . This is because the content can both play a role in fighting cancer cells .
