Breast cancer risk can be calculated by Statistics
A
team of researchers from the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda,
United States, has produced new statistical formula to calculate a
woman's risk of breast cancer within the next 10 to 20 years.
This
new technique to examine the woman's age, number of children, diet,
weight, lifestyle, use of contraceptives, and hormones. That way, researchers can determine the risk of cancer suffered by patients.
Memprediski
not only breast cancer, this technique is also able to predict the risk
of developing endometrial and ovarian cancer.
In
a trial involving nearly 122,000 female, the researchers found that
women aged over 50 years would have a risk of developing breast cancer
among 1,57 21,78 percent percent to a 10-year period.
While at the 20-year period, the risk increased to 3,64 35,11 percent to percent.
The
researchers claim that this new technique capable of accurately
predicting a woman suffering from cancer, especially breast cancer.
According
to Dr. Ruth Pfeiffer, leader of the research, this new technique can be
very helpful in clinical decision making related to the risk of cancer.
"By
using this technique, then a woman has a risk model for dealing with
breast cancer," said Pfeiffer, reported by the Telegraph, August 2,
2013.
This
research gets a warm welcome from both the doctors, because of their
ease in identifying the patients are women who have cancer risks.
The results of this research have been published in the journal PLoS Medicine
