Gastrointestinal cancer could be detected from breath
Scientists have developed a screening tool that can accurately diagnosing gastrointestinal cancer through breath .
This examination is able to identify chemicals that are identical with the tumor cells as well as cancer . As the Dailymail , the accuracy rate reaches 76 percent .
Experts say that this tool will represent a new breakthrough for cancer screening .
Layers cancer has a different metabolism of healthy cells in the body . Cancer cells produce volatile organic components ( VOCs ) that can be detected through the patient's breathing , as reported by the British Journal of Surgery .
In theory , tumors and cancers produce specific components that will not be found in healthy people .
Scientists from the University of Bari Aldo Moro , Dr. Donato Altomare , collecting breath samples from 37 patients with colon cancer and 42 patients were otherwise healthy .
The results showed that patients with colon cancer have a different VOCs when compared to patients who are otherwise healthy .
" The breath sample collection technique is very easy and painless , although this method is an initial phase that is being developed , " Altomare said .
This technique is expected to help identify patients who re- diagnosed with cancer , despite treatment .
When these digestive cancers can be diagnosed early , the chance to stop the development .
Other screening is done by taking a sample of dirt and blood ( fecal occult blood test ) .
Examination of breath now recommended to diagnose some types of other chronic diseases are like tuberculosis and diabetes .
