Smoking after cancer diagnosis increase of risk of death
People who continue to smoke after being diagnosed with cancer have a higher risk of death than those who quit smoking , U.S. researchers said on Friday ( 6/12 ) .
The new study , published in Cancer Epidemiology , Biomarkers & Prevention , a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research , showed not too late to quit smoking after a cancer diagnosis , the researchers said .
They used data from a study investigating the relationship between the typical lifestyle and cancer risk among people age or older menengan in Shanghai , China .
Between 1986 and 1989 , more than 18,000 people aged 45 to 64 years enrolled in the study .
They set up more than 1,600 participants had cancer until 2010 . Among the participants , 340 nonsmokers , 545 quit smoking before their cancer diagnosis , and 747 were smokers at diagnosis .
Of the 474 smokers at diagnosis , 214 people quit smoking after diagnosis , 197 continued to smoke , and the rest of the 336 people are sometimes not smoke , Xinhua - Reuters monitored here on Saturday morning .
Compared to people who do not smoke after a diagnosis of cancer , those who smoke after diagnosis had a 59 percent increased risk of death from all causes , after adjustment performed various factors , including age , location of the cancer , and the type of treatment , the researchers said .
When restricted to people who smoked at diagnosis , those who continued to smoke after diagnosis had a 76 percent increased risk of death from all causes compared to those who quit smoking after diagnosis , the researchers said .
When cancer patients who continue to smoke after diagnosis compared with patients who quit smoking after a cancer diagnosis , the risk of death due to a variety of different locations organ cancers .
The risk of death rises to 2.95 -fold for bladder cancer patients who continue to smoke , 2.36 times for lung cancer patients who continue to smoke , and 2.31 times for colon cancer patients .
