Adults and diagnosis of mesothelioma
Mesothelioma can be diagnosed in people of any age and gender, however, in most cases is usually diagnosed in men over 60 years. The American Cancer Society has established that the majority of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have 65 or more years, with an average age between 50 and 70 years. The reason for this is so late diagnosis slow progression having mesothelioma. Because of the long latency period of the disease, symptoms usually do not appear until the cancer has reached its last stages. The latency period of mesothelioma usually ranges from 20 to 50 years. The American Cancer Society has also established that the diagnosis is given in man four times more than women.
Risk Factors
Although exposure to asbestos is usually the cause of mesothelioma, genetics may also play an important role in the development of the disease. If the cancer has come to be a member of the family, this increases the chance of developing mesothelioma when that same person has been exposed to asbestos. Another factor is the degree of intensity of exposure to asbestos, the greater and longer the more exposure will normally be at risk for mesothelioma. There is also a synergy between snuff and exposure to asbestos, for those who smoke and have been exposed to asbestos are more likely to develop mesothelioma than those who have not smoked.
Although it is a predominantly male disease, women with mesothelioma cases are becoming more common. A case is dated 11 September 2001 is about a woman who after helping in this disaster died five years after exposure. The high intensity of exposure to asbestos fibers during that day was strong enough to significantly advance the latency period.
