Diagnosing mesothelioma epithelial - Subtypes - Surgical Options

Epithelial mesothelioma
Epithelial mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral fiber material is often used in such as building insulation because of its strength and heat resistance. However, when asbestos-containing materials are damaged and the fibers are inhaled, a threatening health effect occurs. Epithelial mesothelioma is the most common form of cancer from exposure to asbestos and have better perspective than the other two types-and biphasic sarcomatoid / mixed. However, the median survival after diagnosis is barely a year.epithelial mesothelioma

Epithelial tissue is the lining of the internal organs and covers all parts of the body. Epithelial mesothelioma symptoms are vague and depends on organs and body area affected. Cancer cells can form in the heart, which is what is called epithelial mesothelioma, the lung tissue that is what is called pleural mesothelioma or abdomen then referring to the abdominal mesothelioma. On rare occasions tumors form in the testes, then called testicular mesothelioma

Symptoms of epithelial mesothelioma
Depending on which area is affected, the symptoms vary and can range from a limitation in breathing, chest pain and bloating. Symptoms may be mild and indistinguishable with respect to other more common diseases, so diagnosis of cancer often not reached until its later stages, when it is less treatable.

Aggressive treatments such as surgery and radiation can be much more effective in its early stages and studies have shown a survival beyond 50% after five years during Phase I. Given the knowledge that early detection is feasible to obtain a better prognosis. If a person has symptoms suggestive of pleural mesothelioma and is known to have been exposed to asbestos, it is required that the diagnostics are exhausted.

Diagnosing mesothelioma epithelial
Diagnosing an epithelial mesothelioma is a hard task. The cancer may be confused with adenocarcinoma, another type of epithelial cancer that is similar to one of the subtypes of mesothelioma, mesothelioma glandular features.

The radiological and pathological examinations and collect data on past exposure to asbestos will be used to diagnose cancer. The patients will also be subject to an imaging system using immunohistochemistry, or any other technique to study the immunological tumor marker.

Cytology and needle biopsy techniques are also used as to whether the patient has an epithelial mesothelioma, however often ineffective because they need to catch a large sample of affected tissue to determine the subtype of mesothelioma. Other procedures such as internal tests or biopsies of the lung cavity, also known as thoracoscopy help distinguish between epithelial mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma.

The type of treatment will be most effective in fighting and preventing the spread of the cells depend on the severity of the cancer and where it is located in the body. Chemotherapy itself has not been proven to be an effective treatment but can be used in conjunction with radiation or surgery. The role of chemotherapy and radiation to reduce the presence of cancer cells but also damage healthy cells so that many side effects occur.

Surgical Options
surgical Surgery can help relieve the pain of patients who are in the final stages of cancer sufferers. Further surgery may be an attempt to cure or improve the prognosis of longevity. It is extremely important to discuss the benefits and risks of treatment options with physicians so that the best possible information is taken

Subtypes of epithelial mesothelioma
Depending on the shape, size and structure mesothelioma is divided into different categories. The most common is the deciduoide epithelial mesothelioma. Originally tried cases involving four young women who had not been exposed to asbestos. All these cases were in the peritoneum and that this subtype was considered, given their unique morphology, was not related to asbestos.

But according to the study published in a medical journal of the University of Texas, four cases of three men and one woman aged between 46 and 78 years, presented this deciduoide subtype in mesothelioma suffering. Two of these four patients had been exposed to asbestos. These findings thus indicate that this variant of epithelial mesothelioma is not limited to a specific population and not even to the peritoneum.
