Physical exercise improves the prognosis of COPD
Experts from the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (separ) indicate that physical exercise is associated with a delay in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and a clear improvement in quality of life patients. However, according to a study, 32% of these patients do not perform any physical activity.
Specialists explain that patients with COPD are prone to sedentary, mainly due to the specific manifestations of the disease, such as bronchial obstruction or associated complications that may suffer.
Therefore, and although they are encouraged to remain active, and performing at least light activity like walking , do some biking, or climbing stairs, a recent study carried out in hospitals in Valencia revealed only 30% of COPD patients performed the exercise suits your needs.
Different studies have shown the benefits that exercise has on these patients. For example, a study also conducted in Valencia reveals that COPD patients to increase physical activity in 1,000 kilocalories a week have a 20% lower risk of mortality than those who remain sedentary.
Specialists insist that physical exercise is the first non-pharmacological measures against COPD, and want to educate these patients and their caregivers to their importance.
