Risk factors for head and neck cancer
Causes of head and neck cancer
In Western countries, the main risk factors for the occurrence of head and neck cancer are alcohol and snuff , which together account for about 75% of the disease. Except for nasopharyngeal tumors, snuff and alcohol are at the origin of 90% of tumors.
However, the abandonment of such habits lowers the risk of a malignant tumor of the head and neck, according to a review of international work, which involved the Catalan Institute of Oncology, published in the journal International Journal of Epidemiology on last year.
The results of combined analysis showed a reduced risk of developing a tumor of head and neck after quitting in just 1-4 years. By contrast, only 40% profit is estimated on the risk of head and neck cancer after approximately 20 years to stop drinking alcohol. This may be due either to a longer time between the cessation of alcohol abuse and decreased risk of head and neck cancer, or a certain amount of irreversible damage associated with drinking that persist in time required .
Other risk factors for head and neck cancer
The classic causes of head and neck cancer are snuff and alcohol, but there are more, such as:
Infections.
Dietary factors.
Occupational factors.
Radiation exposure.
Genetic susceptibility.
