Selenium Prevent Bladder Cancer
A study published in " Cancer Prevention Research " , the journal of the American Association for Cancer Research states December issue , which is a type of mineral selenium is found in whole grains , nuts and meats , may aid in the prevention of bladder cancer at high risk . Researchers from Dartmouth Medical School compared selenium levels in 767 individuals newly diagnosed with bladder cancer with 1,108 people from the general public . Findings showed an association between selenium and bladder cancer among women , some smokers and those who had a positive bladder cancer p53 . In all those studied, there was no relationship between selenium and turned bladder cancer , but women ( 34 % ) , moderate smokers ( 39 % ) and those with p53 positive cancer ( 43 % ) had significant reductions in bladder cancer with higher rates of selenium . " There are different pathways used by developing bladder cancer for the main line and is estimated to involve alterations in the p53 gene , " said researcher Margaret Karagas . "Bladder cancers stemming from these alternations are associated with more advanced disease , " he said . Although other studies have shown a similar relationship between selenium and bladder cancer among women , the study was one of the first to show an association between selenium and p53 positive bladder cancer . " Finally , if it is true that selenium can prevent a certain subset of individuals , like women , from developing bladder cancer , or prevent certain types of tumors , such changes through the p53 pathway , evolved , it gave us a link as to how tumors can be prevented in the future front and potentially lead to chemo - preventive efforts , "said Karagas .
