The first cigarette of the morning is the most dangerous

For many it is a routine habit almost unconscious is wake up and turn on the first day also cigarette. All are dangerous, but this, the first of the morning, the most. So say two new studies published in the 'on line' issue of the journal 'Cancer', concluding that smokers tend to light their first cigarette soon after waking at increased risk of developing lung cancer , head and neck that smokers who tend to expect more.

Team Joshua Muscat, a researcher at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, investigated whether nicotine dependence, defined as the time it takes a smoker to light their first cigarette after waking affects the risk to these people to suffer lung, head and neck cancer, regardless of the frequency of smoking, and for how long.

The researchers looked at 4,775 lung cancer patients and 2,835 controls, all regular smokers. Compared with individuals who smoked more than an hour after rising, people who ate their first cigarette between 31 and 60 minutes after waking were 1.31 times more likely to develop lung cancer . Those who smoked within 30 minutes of waking were 1.79 times more likely to suffer from this disease.

Something similar happened to the 1,055 patients with head and neck cancers and 795 patients in the control group, they all had a history of smoking, analyzed in the study. Comparing individuals who smoked more than an hour after waking, those who smoked between 31 and 60 minutes were 1.42 times more likely to develop cancers of the head and neck and those who smoked in the half hour after waking were one , 59 times more likely to experience these tumors.

The explanation, according Muscat, is that "These smokers have higher levels of nicotine and possibly other toxins in your body and snuff may be more addicted than smokers who wait half an hour or more for your first cigarette of the day."
