Although this reason been vaccinated Women Still Need Routine pap smear
For a woman , cervical cancer may be one of the dread disease . Therefore , many of them protect themselves from the risk of cervical cancer by vaccination . But keep in mind , though it was vaccinated , women still have a pap smear . Why ?
" The misconception that often occurs is when a woman has been vaccinated then usually feel ' Oh , I do not need a pap smear or HPV virus detection because it had the vaccine ' . Was wrong . Why ? Because the vaccine can only protect the virus Human Papilloma Virus ( HPV ) subtypes 16 and 18 , " said Dr. Sandy Qlintang , Division of Biopharma Innogene Kalbiotech .
That he told detikHealth in discussions that were held at StemCell media & Cancer Institute , Jl Gen. Achmad Yani , Jakarta , Thursday ( 10/24/2013 ) .
According to Dr. Sandy , about the HPV virus that has 100 kinds of subtypes . Well , the cause of cervical cancer was more the lack there of 30 types, including HPV subtypes 16 , 18 , 52 , 53 , 45 , and still a few more.
" So far in Indonesia there are two types of vaccine for the HPV virus . Firstly vaccine subtypes 16 and 18 , while the second type is a subtype vaccine 16 , 18 , 6 , and 11 . Subtypes 6 and 11, it is actually not the cause of cervical cancer , genital warts but , "said Dr. Sandy .
Dr. Sandy stated that the draw is any research that states that in Asia , most HPV virus entry is of type 52 . While there are vaccines that protect against virus subtypes yet 52 .
"If he was vaccinated with subtypes 16 and 18 , but the incoming virus subtypes 52 , it no protection . Means that there is the possibility of having cancer too right ? Now, this is still the importance of early detection despite having been vaccinated . Admit that we still need to do more research to be able to find a vaccine that is in accordance with the conditions of the highest in Asia , "said Dr. Sandy .
