Early Baldness Linked to Prostate Cancer Risk

Both are connected via a product of testosterone called Dihydrotestosterone or DHT

PENNSYLVANIA , Jaringnews.com - A recent study found a link between premature baldness with prostate cancer , which is connected through a type of testosterone called Dihydrotestosterone . At first glance , it seems that prostate cancer is not associated with baldness .

But researchers at the University of Pennsylvania Charnita Zeigler - Johnson said the two can be connected via a product of testosterone called Dihydrotestosterone or DHT .

As quoted from Mindanao ( 3/4 ) , said , " DHT is the type of testosterone that seems to be associated with male pattern baldness and prostate cancer associated with the emergence and progression of prostate cancer , " said Zeigler .

A number of studies have observed an association between baldness and prostate cancer , but Zeigler - Johnson said this is the first time focuses on men of African descent , the group had a mortality rate of prostate cancer two and a half times higher than white males in America .

In the study, Zeigler - Johnson and colleagues asked 300 patients with prostate cancer and 200 prostate cancer patients not on the history of their baldness . They then compared the type of baldness and age when men 's hair thinning with their health history .

" Among the men who started balding at age 30 , they are more likely didiagnosia prostate cancer at an early age , which means before the age of 60 . And they are more likely to be diagnosed with a higher stage , the cancer is more severe , " Zeigler - Johnson .

Those most at risk for severe prostate cancer is the men who go bald in the forehead , which is often called hairline shrinkage . But all types of baldness was associated with an increased risk .

Because this study was performed on a special high-risk group , African-American men , it is not clear whether the link between baldness and prostate cancer is true for other groups . Research Charnita Zeigler - Johnson and colleagues report in the journal Cancer Epidemiology , Biomarkers & Prevention
