Study : Cancer Patients More Married Longevity

Anyone diagnosed with chronic diseases , such as cancer certainly could not face it alone . He needs the support of the people closest , especially from the husband / wife . A new study also showed that single people with cancer have a low chance of survival .

" Our data provide a wedding show significant impact on the health of cancer patients , and it is seen consistently in every cancer patient that we reviewed , " said researcher Dr . Surefire Aizer of the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program , Boston .

Researchers using the database of the National Cancer Institute to analyze the condition of 735,000 people diagnosed of cancer between the years 2004-2008. All of them were diagnosed with 10 types of cancer cause of death in the U.S. , including lung cancer , colorectal ( colon and rectum ) , breast , pancreatic , prostate , liver , non- Hodgkin's lymphoma , cancer of the head and neck , ovarian and esophageal cancers .

Then the researchers looked at whether the participants had marital status or not , then rule out other factors that may affect the survival rate of patients , such as age , race , gender , income and education level number .

Sure enough , researchers found that cancer patients who do not / have not been married are more likely to experience metastasis or cancer spread to parts of the body , ie by 17 percent . Even this condition also applies to widows and widowers .

Besides cancer patients who do not have a spouse 53 percent more likely to not fully get the necessary treatment to cure the illness . In other words, the researchers concluded that if cancer patients who are married live longer than patients who no longer have a single or couple .

" It seems that the social support that led to the emergence of pasanganlah this regard . Social support of the pair of them continued to accompany the patient during treatment , including fulfilling any appointment with the doctor , and encourage them to undergo scanning , " said Aizer as reported by CBS News

Yet researchers stressed if the single or widower / widow can still get similar support from peers and family members in the face of diagnosis and therapy . This support proved to provide a real difference to the survival of cancer patients .

To that end , researchers also warn if the cancer specialist doctors should pay more attention to patients who may still be single or widower / widow .

Previously a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology find someone who is married to a smaller risk of having a heart attack or die from it. In contrast , another study claims death of a spouse can increase a person's risk of heart attack by up to 21 times higher
