Throat Cancer Patients Potentially Infected With HPV
A third man who was diagnosed with cancer of the throat is infected with HPV (human papillomavirus human). The research also revealed HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer and the virus spread through genital contact or oral.
The research, published in the journal of Clinical Oncology that revealed approximately 1,500 people diagnosed with throat cancer each year in the United Kingdom where about 470 people died of the disease.
A team of researchers from Cancer Research United Kingdom said, of more than 100 types of HPV, there are two types of HPV that are most likely to cause cancer is HPV-16 and HPV-18. HPV-16 is regarded as a cause of the cause for about 60% of cervical cancer, 80% of anal cancers, and 60% of oral cancer.
"Practicing safe sex can reduce the risk of getting or transmitting HPV, but condoms will not stop the infection completely," says Dr. Ruth Travis, one of the research team. (BBC/Haufan Hashim Salengke)
