Vaccine developed cervical cancer cell killer
Unlike other vaccines are made to prevent virus attacks , Inovio's vaccine was made to strengthen fight immune cells and cervical cancer cells that have been grown .
Until now, cervical cancer is the second most types of cancer experienced by women . Cervical cancer has emngakibatkan 493 000 new cases and 274,000 deaths each year . Even so , approximately 10-25 percent of women who had pre - cancerous cells in the cervix is able to eliminate these cells by itself .
" It is not clear why it could happen , " said Joseph Kim , Inovio Pharmaceuticals chief executive , as reported by Reuters ( 10/10 ) .
After review, it seems that women have a high level of immunity , called T cells that can eliminate cancer-causing genes E6 and E7 .
The company's goal is to develop a vaccine that can strengthen the immune cells and give him the ability to kill cervical cancer -causing genes .
The research team looked at the effects of three vaccine called VGX - 3100 on 18 women who had undergone cancer surgery . The vaccine is capable of producing T cells in 14 women in a period of two years .
"These cells are not only numerous. They are also able to seek out and kill the target cells , " explains Kim .
This study also shows that there is no negative effect caused by the three vaccines . Lab tests showed more than 90 percent of the women succeeded in developing T cells to kill cancer cells .
Inovio's vaccine is currently undergoing a second test by observing the 150 women who had not undergone treatment or surgery of cervical cancer earlier . The results of this trial are expected to come out in 2013 .
