Too much vitamin B12 indicates increased risk of cancer

A study by researchers in Denmark Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Department of Clinical Biochemistry Unigersitario Hospital of Aarhus, has revealed that levels of vitamin B12 (cobalamin CBL) above normal (200-600 pmol / L) may indicate that a person has an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer .

Vitamin B12 is essential for proper functioning of the body, however, and some studies have associated high levels of CBL with certain cancers, and the authors of the new research used Danish medical records to review the data of 333,667 patients who did not cancer and check the impact of this disease in this group between 1998 and 2010.

The study's authors noted that, in general, the risk of developing cancer increased when CBL levels were higher, especially during the first year after the measurement, and in patients whose levels were above 800pmol / L.

After five years of follow-up, also found that the risk for hematologic cancers and those who were associated with the consumption of alcohol, and snuff have remained high in patients with higher levels of 800pmol / L, so the researchers argue that high plasma levels of CBL increase the risk of cancer diagnosed later.

These scientists explain, however, that a high plasma level of CBL surely would not be associated with a normal intake of vitamin B12, because the intake of foods or supplements containing this micronutrient does not significantly increase these levels, but most likely is that high levels of CBL occur as a result of a malignant process is still unknown.
