Unresectable Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma - Stages and surgery
Unresectable Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma can be a difficult cancer to treat regardless of what stage the patient is. Issues such as whether the treatment is palliative or curative, and which is specific aim of treatment are important to know before the treatment begins. It is also important to determine the benefits and risks associated with various treatments to make the decision is informed. The TNM system divides mesothelioma patients in different stages that will help the doctor determine the diagnosis. However there is a simpler system that helps you decide if the cancer is resectable or not. Mesothelioma can resect all visible means of the tumor can be removed with various surgical procedures. Conversely if unresectable assumed that surgery is not an option in the course of treatment
Stages and surgery
resectable mesotheliomaThe stage with better potential to be resected is Stage I. Stages II and III can also be resectable although there are exceptions. There are various aspects to be considered to determine whether the tumor is resectable. Tumor size, metastasis, tumor subtype, tumor location and the general health of the patient. The surgery has better long-term benefit in patients in phase I. This is because at this stage there is every chance of removing the tumor or cancer cells. Surgery may be only palliative for those who are in the final stages but the benefits are better in the short term. Especially for those with peritoneal mesothelioma in early stages surgery may be very beneficial. Mesothelioma resection may be performed through various surgical procedures:
Pleurectomy : is a procedure that removes part of the pleura, or the lining of the lungs
Decortication : is surgical removal of the outer layer, or membrane covering an organ fibers
Extrapleural pneumonectomy: surgery is used to remove part of the lining of the lung, part of the membrane of the heart, part of the diaphragm and lung affected
Only a specialist is usually able to diagnose mesothelioma and develop the best treatment plan for each patient need. Regardless of whether or not to resect mesothelioma is a difficult cancer to treat. Often the necessary treatment is palliative aimed at improving symptoms or extend the forecast. Mesothelioma has been linked to asbestos long ago, a human carcinogen via inhalation and ingestion remains lodged in the lungs, heart and abdomen. No currently known cure for mesothelioma
